Saborsko
Public WiFi and network infrastructure for the municipality of Saborsko — connecting the community with reliable internet access.
Challenge
The municipality of Saborsko, situated in the mountainous landscape of Gorski Kotar, faced limited internet access for its residents and visitors. The rural setting and dispersed settlements made deploying traditional infrastructure difficult, and the existing connectivity was insufficient for the needs of public institutions, the school, and local residents. The municipality recognized the need for public WiFi coverage in the central part of the settlement as a step toward digitalization and improving the quality of life in the community.
Solution
In collaboration with the municipal authorities, we designed a network infrastructure covering key public spaces — the municipal building, the square, the school grounds, and surrounding public areas. We used high-power outdoor access points designed for covering large open areas, placed at strategically selected positions to maximize coverage with a minimal number of devices.
The network backbone was built using a combination of fiber optic and wireless links between key points, achieving redundancy and high system availability. The system is configured with a captive portal that enables simple user login, and bandwidth management ensures fair distribution of throughput among all users.
Results
Residents and visitors of Saborsko now have access to free and reliable WiFi in the center of the settlement. Public institutions, including the municipal administration and school, use stable network infrastructure for their daily operations. The project has been positively received by the community and represents an important step in the digitalization of a rural area. The scalable system architecture allows for future expansion of coverage to additional parts of the municipality as needed.
